Book Reviews

Thank you Alice for such an enjoyable story with a fascinating cast of characters. You have crafted an intricate tale of personal challenges and intersecting lives. I found Bute  Creek engaging and moving. The great strength of your story is its characters who each bring something different to the tale and are easy to relate to. You’ve done a great job of bringing out the similarities and points of connection between them when on the surface, they seem to have little in common. I like how you have woven the story around real locations, particularly in South Australia, throughout.

Absolute applause must be given to the efforts Alice made to consult members of the Aboriginal community to ensure that nothing in Bute Creek represents cultural appropriation or causes offence to Aboriginal people. Growing up Aboriginal it wasn’t always easy to find Aboriginal characters in books or films. It’s deadly that times have changed and now all kinds of Aboriginal artists and role models have platforms that reach Aboriginal youth. I can see Bute Creek being added to school curriculums because of how unapologetically and authentically inclusive it is. The story is a family saga and I found that the characters Alice created were lovely in their flaws and perfectly complimented each other. I hope you enjoy reading Bute Creek and find yourself as enthralled as I was with the ups and downs of the people who live there.
